The Copper Plate Landscape series is a play on man-made versus natural spaces and materials. I use oil paint to create these landscapes on scrap copper plate. The plates are cleaned before painting but are not cut, sanded or polished. The roughness of the copper surface references its handling and calls attention to the flatness of the material. By contrast, the landscape creates an illusion of deep space. Both the revealed copper spaces and the black and white palette show us how artificial the scene really is, but the cohesiveness of the colors and the peace within the landscape draw us in.

Signed on back

This painting hangs using a "french cleat" - one half is attached to the back of the painting, the other screws into the wall. This allows the painting to "float" just above the surface of the wall.

**Note about handling: hold the painting by the french cleat, or use clean white gloves - touching the copper plate directly with your fingers will unevenly discolor copper over time.
